You do not have to be a professional painter in order to paint a room. If you take time to learn the right techniques on how to go about it, then you can do a great job. - Move everything out of the room. You can do this a couple of days before the actual day that you are meant to start painting. If this is not an option, then move everything to the center of the room or to one corner and then cover them with a piece of cloth. This is to prevent paint from getting on to the stuff. If you will be working on the ceiling, remove any lampshades. Moving stuff out of the way before you get started will help you save a lot of time and energy on the day you will be painting.
- In addition, cover the floor with a large piece of cloth or with newspapers, to prevent paint from splashing on the floor. You can allocate space in a corner where you will keep all your work tools.
- Get your tools ready. This includes the paint that you will use and something to open the paint can, stir stick to stir the paint before you use it, paint brush, rollers, roller tray and roller pole, small bowl and painter’s tape. Use a good quality brush and roller, so as to do a good job, cheap brushes can do a messy job.
- Clean the walls, if they are dirty before you start painting. If there are any holes or cracks on the walls, make sure to fill them up with sparckle. Scrape off any peelings and then use sandpaper to smoothen the area. Apply painter’s tape on any areas where you don’t want the paint to get to. This includes on window frames, base boards, sockets and trim. Apply short strips that overlap. Make sure to press the tape down firmly on the surface, so that it sticks.
- Get the right attire for the job. Get a headscarf or something to cover your hair, so that paint doesn’t get on your hair. You also need some overalls or old clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. Do not paint using your good clothes since it will be hard to get rid of the paint.
- When you begin to paint, pour some of the paint in a paint bowl. Avoid painting from the paint can directly. This is to prevent impurities, such as dust and small pieces of wood, from getting into the whole can of paint.
- You can either start by painting the trim first or the ceiling or walls first. It doesn’t really matter. It depends on what your preferences are. Start painting in long and continuous strokes in a W pattern until the room is done. Leave the paint to dry then apply the second coat of paint.
